Guest Author & Giveaway: Jennifer Estep on Inspirations & Influences

“Inspirations and Influences” is a series of articles in which we invite authors to write guest posts talking about their…well, Inspirations and Influences. The cool thing is that the writers are given free reign so they can go wild and write about anything they want. It can be about their new book, series or about their career as a whole.

Today’s guest is Urban Fantasist & Romance author Jennifer Estep. Jennifer is the author of paranormal romance series Bigtime (Karma Girl, Hot Mama, & Jinx), but this year she has thrown her hat into the Urban Fantasy ring with her Elemental Assassin series. The first book in this new series, Spider’s Bite follows Gin Blanco, known better by her assassin moniker, Spider – she’s the best at her job in all of Ashland, and has the ability to work magic in the elements of stone and ice. The second book in the Elemental Assassin series, Web of Lies his stores next week on May 25th!

To celebrate the upcoming release, we have invited Ms. Estep to talk about her writing, influences and inspirations for her Elemental Assassins series. (Plus, we also have a giveaway)

Please give a warm welcome to Jennifer Estep!

Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to the Book Smugglers for inviting me to guest blog today. Thanks so much!

As some of you may know, I’m the author of the Bigtime superhero paranormal romance series – Karma Girl (2007), Hot Mama (2007), and Jinx (2008). I also write the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and have three books coming out in that series this year – Spider’s Bite (which came out in February), Web of Lies (which debuts on May 25), and Venom (October).

The Smugglers asked me to talk a little bit about my writing inspirations and influences today, and one of the topics that they suggested was what got me interested in writing urban fantasy since I had previously written paranormal romances. So why did I switch to urban fantasy?

Well, the short answer is because I like kick-butt heroines.

I’ve always loved books, movies, and TV shows where the heroine is just as strong – if not stronger – than the guys around her. Buffy Summers, Sydney Bristow, Wonder Woman – these are the kinds of female characters that I admire, girls who are just as comfortable dressing up to go to a party as they are diffusing a nuclear bomb or saving the world from vampires, aliens, and other creepy crawlies.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the heroines in my Bigtime paranormal romance books are pretty kick-butt themselves, especially Fiona Fine, the star of Hot Mama. But I had been wanting to write something darker and grittier with an even tougher heroine for a while. I’ve also always liked reading about assassin characters in fantasy literature, and I figured that urban fantasy was a genre that would let me combine all these things at once. Plus, there are so many great heroines in urban fantasy, folks like Rachel Morgan and Karen Murphy, and I wanted to add my own character to the mix.

So I came up with my toughest heroine yet – Gin Blanco, an assassin known as the Spider. Gin makes no bones about the fact that she kills people for money, something that she’s very, very good at. I figured that if I was going to write an assassin character, I might as well go big or go home. There’s nothing worse than a whiny assassin. 😉

As much as I like shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, it seems like vampires are everywhere these days, and I knew when I started writing Spider’s Bite that I wanted to have some different kinds of magic/creatures in my books as well. So I decided on vampires, giants, dwarves, and elementals, or folks who can control one of the four elements – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

For the record, Gin happens to be a Stone and Ice elemental, meaning that she can control both of those elements. But she’s just as happy to introduce you to the sharp end of the five silverstone knives that she carries with her at all times as she is to blast you with her magic. Like Gin says, there are dozens of ways to help people quit breathing, and she doesn’t need her magic to help her with that.

I’ll admit that it’s been a bit of a challenge to write such an unapologetic assassin character like Gin and make her likable at the same time. Gin isn’t your typical hero – she’s not inherently good like a Sydney Bristow or Buffy Summers is. But you know what? Bad girls always have more fun anyway. I think Faith on Buffy is a prime example of that.

So there you have it. Some of my inspirations for my girl Gin Blanco and the Elemental Assassin series. Writing Gin’s adventures has been a blast so far, and I hope that folks have as much fun reading the books as I do writing them.

What about you guys? Who are some of your favorite heroines, urban fantasy or otherwise? Share in the comments.

Hi, everyone! I just wanted to say thanks for dropping by the blog today. Those are all great heroines that you mentioned.

Bella — I think the main difference between UF and paranormal romance is simply the amount of romance — that’s usually the focus of a PR, where it might only be a secondary plot in a UF.

Steven — Gabalbon is one of those authors I keep meaning to read.

Wendy — I liked Faith too. She did have more fun than Buffy, but bad girls always do. 8)

Julia — I like the BDB series too.

Alex — Rachel Caine is another author that I’ve heard good things about.

That is a hard one, there are so many excellent heroines in fiction and on tv right now. I loved Faith on Buffy because she got all the great lines and she also redeemed herself, which always makes a great character. I also liked Kaylee on Firefly because she was just so honest and fresh.

In fiction, I love Cat from Jeaninene Frost’s books, Gin from your series and Kate from Julie Kenner’s Soccer Mom series. The reason they are all strong kick ass women who can take care of themselves, they are also flawed but genuinely good people and they always get the witty lines — I like that in a character — I detest wuss’s like Bella from the Twilight series, I want to read about someone who could save MY wussy butt

    Keep on Writing!

I think my favorite fantasy heroine is – and I’m going back a ways here – Aeryn in Robin McKinley’s The Hero and the Crown. She’s driven to do what she needs to do to feel whole and nothing stops her. She goes thru hell, with little appreciation from others, but never hesitates. She’s just always felt like a fully realized person to me, a very empathetic character.

Let’s see…I like Talia from the Valdemar books, for overcoming so many problems to be Super Important. Also, the Supergirls from the Wheel of Time can be enjoyable (not all of the time, mind you), but Egwene has recently shot ahead in my esteem. I’m positive I missed someone, but that’s all I can think of right now.

I admit, I do like Buffy, but I always preferred Faith. Faith didn’t make any excuses for the way she was – she was sexy, kick-ass, tough, and funny. It always seemed to me that Buffy could get a little whiny, which is why I liked Faith more.

Actually, one of my favorite kick-ass females is Sonja Blue from Nancy Collins’ books. She’s not really a heroine — she’s a vampire (with extra mojo), and she kills bad guys. But, she’s got a really dark side to her, as well, so I’m not sure if she’d really count as a heroine. However, I’ve read The Sonja Blue Collection about 10 times, just because I like her so much. 🙂

I second Scarlett O’Hara – GWTW is one of the best romances ever, and Scarlett is quite a kick-ass heroine. Phedre from the Kushiel books, Mercy Thompson, Elizabeth Bennet are some from literature. Detective Becket from Castle, Dr Brennan from Bones, the chicks from Firefly/Serenity: Zoe, Inara, River and Kaylee are some from TV. I’m sure I’ll think of some more as soon as I post this. I think it’s great there’s so many to choose from!

It’s not very paranormal, though it IS urban, but I really like Detective Beckett, from Castle. 😀 I tend to adore snarky, or even just people who can keep up with snark. OH, and also Zoe, from Firefly. One of the very few terse characters who I like, but she’s so badass I am just in awe. River isn’t badass so much as not in the same reality as everyone else, so I think I must skip her. And one more, hmmm, how do I pick… Mrs. Pollifax. The original fluffy little old lady spy. Who is awesome beyond count. ^_^ (Also I heart Mary Russell VERY hard, and Sister Magdalen from Brother Cadfeal.)

Probably, my most favorite is Eve Dallas from JD Robbs’s “In Death” series. Not paranormal but definitely urban fantasy. And after that JR Ward’s BDB, all those guy’s are extra special.

First of all, let me say that I loved Gin Blanco. I had a really hard time putting it down and read it (mostly except for those darn interruptions from the kid) in one fell swoop. I’m really looking forward to Web of Lies.

Some of my favorite heroines are Patricia Briggs’ (is that the right punctuation? I can never remember) Mercy Thompson and Anna Latham (Alpha and Omega). I also love Nalini Singh’s Elena from the Guild Hunter series. And I really like Michelle Sagara’s Kaylin Neya. Okay, stopping now.

At the moment I have only two faves: Cat Crawfield from Jeaniene Frost and Mercy Thompson from Patricia Briggs. I love the attitude of both these women. Just this side of smart-aleck, and both place high value on standing on their on two feet. With that they still can allow love into their lives. I welcome the opportunity to add a new favorite to my list.:D

I’m lucky that I started reading urban fantasy just recently and there are so many great heroines to choose from, but my all time fav is still Buffy. She went through so much in the course of that series and she took it all – no matter what was thrown at her, she never gave up even when she thought it was hopeless.

In books, right now my favorites are Mercy Thompson, and Kate Daniels, although there are so many others I could also name.

I’m still all about Buffy. She’s my favorite heroine. That her huge heroic act is that she ends up sharing her powers and empowering other young women? That always warms my heart.

Also, there’s Roslin and Starbuck and Athena from BSG, and book-wise, Eve Dallas takes the cake.
