Smugglers’ Stash and News

Hello everyone and Happy Sunday!

What a week that was for SFF Fandom… I won’t dwell on it since I spent most of the week tweeting on the subject of Jonathan Ross and the Hugo Awards but would like to leave a few links to some of the more thoughtful, complete, unbiased articles about the events:

1) Start with this timestamped Storify of what really went down on Twitter last Saturday (thanks to @infamousfiddler)

2) Then read “The timeline problem, or why Seanan (McGuire) isn’t the reason why Ross withdrew

3) Then read Foz Meadows’ incredibly thoughtful analysis about the problem and how it happened, the fact that the Chairs were not prepared for the announcement, and the context in which most of us criticised the choice of having Ross hosting the Hugos.

4) And finally, please read Kameron Hurley’s articles on the matter. They are not only spot on about the specific events they address but also take a considered, intelligent look at context, history in relation to narrative and privilege: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: On Empathy and the Power of Privilege and Rage Doesn’t Exist in a Vacuum, or: Understanding the Complex Continuum of Internet Butt-Hurt*.

I’m looking forward to what you guys have to say about Winner’s Circle. So much buzz? But of course, with a cover so jaw-dropping and a synopsis so intriguing, what do you expect? I’ve read one of Rutkoski’s middle grade books (Cabinet of Wonders) and thought it was imaginatively fun. My eye has been on the Winner’s Circle, for sure? ^^
