Smugglers Stash

Smugglers’ Stash and News

Hello friends! Ana here – if you allow me to take one moment to talk about non-bookish stuff? My sister had her first baby this week – my niece and god-daughter Lara – I can’t begin to express how happy I am but also how sad I was that I wasn’t able to be there with them (since they are both in Brazil). Lara is the cutest thing ever, and both mom and baby are fine and I will see them in three weeks. When I will present Lara with her first book – a Smuggler in training? MAYBE.

Baby stuff done, moving onwards!

This Week on The Book Smugglers:

On Monday, Thea reviews Obsidian Mirror, the first in a new series by Smuggler-favourite writer Catherine Fisher.

Aww, congratulations to your sister and to you on becoming an aunt. My little niece lives in the same country but I don’t see her that often either, and it’s always an interesting experience when I do.

My nieces also live abroad. They read me stories over skype. The distance is hard but the visits are great πŸ™‚

Whoot! Congratulations on becoming an aunt, Ana! Like Heidi said, being an aunt is the best. Now you get to be the eccentric, crazy, book aunt. So much fun. Before (or during) your trip to Brazil, you need to watch Auntie Mame (1958) with Rosalind Russell* for tips.

So excited to hear about the new Catherine Fisher novel and, when I went to request the book, to find out that my library has lots of other books by her. Why didn’t I know this? I loved Incarceron and its sequel Sappique but never followed up on prior books she may have written. Now I have this wonderful stash of books to explore. Don’t you love when that happens?

Thea, I’m interested in reading what you thought of The Cup and the Crown. It took a turn that I find potentially disturbing but will wait to see if my fears are played out in the final book. Can’t wait to see if you got the same vibe and, if so, what you thought about it.

Also looking forward to finding out both your takes on A Spear of Summer Grass. It was on many people’s anticipated reads list for 2013 but lately I’ve been reading disappointed reviews.

*or read the book it was based on Auntie Mame : an irreverent escapade by Patrick Dennis

Congrats on the new baby. I always miss births in my family because I live so far away and I’ve come up with a brightside– by the time I get down to visit the novelty of holding the baby has worn off for everyone else and I get all the cuddling I want. Doesn’t help much but it is a perk.
