Today, we are delighted to welcome Smuggler-favourite Sarah Rees Brennan back to the blog and to be hosting the cover reveal for Untold, the second book in her new Gothic series The Lynburn Legacy.
Behold! The Smugglerific Cover (and summary)!
THE SMUGGLERIFIC COVER: UNTOLD
ABOUT THE BOOK:
‘Free from bonds, but not each other
It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.
But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?’
Untold comes out September 24th. Start the countdown!
But WAIT! That is not all! Unspoken, the first book in the series (which Ana LOVED), is getting a new cover – below – for its paperback edition!
THE SMUGGLERIFIC COVER: UNSPOKEN
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Kami Glass is in love with someone she’s never met – a boy the rest of the world is convinced is imaginary. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she doesn’t complain. She runs the school newspaper and keeps to herself for the most part – until disturbing events begin to happen. There has been screaming in the woods and the dark, abandoned manor on the hill overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. As Kami starts to investigate for the paper, she finds out that the town she has loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secrets- and a murderer- and the key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy who everyone thought was imaginary may be real…and he may be dangerous.

April 22, 2013 at 7:33 amAwwww man! I’m kinda miffed we are going through another mid-series cover change!! I know they normally do new covers for the paperback version, but is that new cover for the hardback too? If it is, why? The original cover was so unique and eye-catching! GAH! And it’s not like I dislike the new covers; I think they are decent, but I wish they hadn’t just ditched the original entirely!
That said, I am a huge fan of this series too and I can’t WAIT!

April 22, 2013 at 7:53 amBoth covers are gorgeous. Can’t wait to read these books.

April 22, 2013 at 7:56 amOooh I’m really fond of the hardcover design of Unspoken but it’s interesting that the new covers are aiming for a different air.
I don’t actually read gothic novels that often now because my experience with the genre has been a bit of a hit-and-miss lately, but I’m partial to Edgar Allan Poe (especially The Pit and the Pendulum), and Neil Gaiman has written a wonderful narrative poem based on the Robber Bridegroom/Mr Fox story called The White Road.

April 22, 2013 at 8:07 amGorgeous, can’t wait for Untold! I think my favorite YA Gothic story would have to be….Unspoken. 😉
AH
April 22, 2013 at 8:11 amThose are beautiful covers. I haven’t really had the opportunity to read too many YA Gothic novels. Perhaps one with that kind of feel would be Towering and I enjoyed that book. I’m looking forward to reading this series.

April 22, 2013 at 8:40 amWow. They are lovely covers. Though I still prefer the first cover for Unspoken. Nonetheless, it’s the story that counts and it’s AWESOME! 🙂

April 22, 2013 at 9:20 amgotta start off by saying that I am absolutely IN LOVE with the new covers <3 they look amazing and just wow. I'm speechless.
Okay so I don't read a lot of gothic novels and I'm not even sure if this book is a gothic novel but I'll say Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. And if that really doesn't fall under that category then it's definitely Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan (: hehe
Lea
April 22, 2013 at 9:22 amI also love Rebecca!
And can’t wait to read Unspoken and Untold! The cover change is interesting, and I’m looking forward to finding out how it relates to the story.
Thank you for the giveaway!

April 22, 2013 at 10:00 amI am a big fan of the first cover Unspoken has and I was a bit disappointed to hear Untold wouldn’t have similar one, but now that I these two, I have to say that I looooove them!

April 22, 2013 at 10:32 amOooooo I am so torn on these covers. The original one was SOOOO pretty and I would have loved if they stuck with that sort of design, but these new ones are really pretty too!
I haven’t really read that many Gothic novels, but I did really like Jane Eyre.
Kyle Patrick Magistrado
April 22, 2013 at 10:34 amI’m not sure if they are but..
THe Unbecoming of Mara Dyer?
Sisters Red & Sweetly?
Hannah
April 22, 2013 at 10:44 amI like the dramatic flourishes of text on both covers, and the lovely curly bits on the “Lynburn Legacy” titles. I adore Kami and her friends – really looking forward to what happens in Untold!
Does We Have Always Lived In The Castle count as a Gothic novel? I think that’s my favourite, if so! Always like a bit of Daphne du Maurier, too.
Kristina
April 22, 2013 at 10:58 amSo excited to see where the series goes!!
Kelly L.

April 22, 2013 at 11:06 amFor Gothic novels I like The Twin’s Daughter a lot, a very different feel to it then most books. I also love Jane Austens take on Gothic novels in her book Northanger Abbey

I do like the cover for Untold a lot, I just loved Unspoken’s first cover better than this new one. But maybe I just have to get used to it a bit 🙂

April 22, 2013 at 11:10 amI haven’t read too much Gothic YA but one that I really enjoy is Cynthia Leitich-Smith’s TANTALIZE.

April 22, 2013 at 11:11 amUNSPOKEN, obviously, is my favorite Gothic novel! By far! I really, really loved the previous cover, but I must say I also love the new. Anything that will help the series, I’m for!

Jessica Lee
April 22, 2013 at 11:21 amI have to say that my all time favorite gothic novel is always going to be–hands down– Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I prefer the 1818 text to the 1823, but I still love them both!
Chachic
April 22, 2013 at 11:24 amAww it makes me kind of sad that the Untold cover doesn’t match the original Unspoken artwork, that one was so pretty. But it’s good that the new Unspoken cover matches this one. Hmm my favorite gothic novel – I think that would probably be Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart. 🙂
Christa
April 22, 2013 at 11:30 amI love Gothic and Southern Gothic novels but if I have to choose one favourite I think I would have to go with Rebecca. It’s a classic for a reason!
Lexi
April 22, 2013 at 11:33 amFor Gothic novels, I like Weathering Heights and Jane Eyre. Otherwise, I may have to go look into the first one in this series.
Andrea @Cozy Up With A Good Read
April 22, 2013 at 11:42 amI was honestly scared of what they would do with these covers, but I really love them, I definitely want these covers on my shelf. I My favourite Gothic tale would probably have to be Wuthering Heights.

April 22, 2013 at 11:51 amI like the Untold cover more than I expected to! I’m just in love with the first Unspoken cover, it was so pretty. But I’m SOOOOOOOOOOO excited to read book 2, the first was pretty amazing.

April 22, 2013 at 11:59 amMy favortie gothic would have to be Jane Eyre. I loved Unspoken and can not wait for Untold!
Paige
April 22, 2013 at 12:10 pmOkay, I may be the lone voice here, but my reaction to the new Unspoken cover is just UGH. What jumps out at me is Kami’s cleavage.
Fave gothic novel? I suppose Jane Eyre, though I also really like The Castle of Otranto.
Anjeli
April 22, 2013 at 12:19 pmThis series looks interesting! Gonna add this to my reading list =)

April 22, 2013 at 12:24 pmnot a fan of the cover, i have to say. but the book rocks. as a non-caucasian person i admire the diversity that is present in the story.

April 22, 2013 at 12:40 pmYay! Seems like all the books I want come out in September, such a long wait 🙁
Eliza
April 22, 2013 at 12:45 pmLooking at these generic covers, all I can do is ask “WHY?” The original cover was so very lovely and stood out, now these books look like almost every other YA book out there. Sigh.
My favorite Gothic book is The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. It’s a wonderful, modern gothic story for the booklover. Yay, Suz Glo, isn’t it a great book? So glad that someone else loves it as much as I do.
Sheila
April 22, 2013 at 12:46 pmI really had fun with book one and look forward to book two. That said, I also loved the two-color, cut-paper look of the original cover. I’m sad they moved away from that. Maybe it was to juvenile?
Sheila
April 22, 2013 at 12:46 pm*too juvenile.

April 22, 2013 at 1:29 pmI’m a huge fan of The Ghosts of Ashbury High–maybe not quite traditional gothic, but amazing all the same. I’m really excited for book 2!

April 22, 2013 at 1:40 pmTotally meh on the new covers; loved the old one. Also I hate the trend of doing cover redesigns before the series is complete.
Leah
April 22, 2013 at 1:41 pmCant wait til it finally comes out!!
Kiri
April 22, 2013 at 1:58 pmUntold cover isn’t what I was expecting at all, but I like it! As for Unspoken…I didn’t like the old paperback cover much (I don’t know if it’s just the UK version, but the one with the two people portraying Kami and Jared on the front? But anyways)and I think this one is better, but at the same time I do see what other people mean about Kami’s cleavage-also the first thing I noticed!
As for favourite Gothic novel…hmm. I’ll probably have to go with Jane Eyre 🙂
Lea Krnjeta
April 22, 2013 at 2:05 pmThat would be Dracula.Cheesy, I know, but that book is excellent.
Steph
April 22, 2013 at 2:27 pmI liked the other cover better!
Gerd D.
April 22, 2013 at 2:30 pmLike the new cover design, I think they did good work translating the original cover – eventhough it is not quite as striking.
It does remind me some of the early UK-covers for Patricia’s Mercy Thompson books.
Favourite Gothic novel: Frankenstein.
Shelley was the first author to prove to me that there’s more to the classics than just Poe.
Emma
April 22, 2013 at 3:13 pmI don’t know, I may have liked the old cover better.
Favorite gothic novel: I love Mary Stewart’s gothic novels. My fav is probably Nine Coaches Waiting.

April 22, 2013 at 3:20 pmLove SRB’s storytelling style! Thank you so much for the giveaway! I adored her Demons Lexicon series and am looking forward to Unspoken!

April 22, 2013 at 3:32 pmumm, I don’t read many Gothic novels so I’ll have to go with the classic Jane Eyre. Thank you for the giveaway!
Paige
April 22, 2013 at 3:42 pmNot sure whether The Folk Keeper really counts as Gothic, but it’s my favourite dark and twisty tale.
jenn aka the picky girl
April 22, 2013 at 3:47 pmSuper disappointed in these covers. They look so much like every other YA cover I see these days. Loved the one Unspoken had before.
Anyway, I’m glad the next one is coming up. Unspoken was such a cliffhanger.
jenn aka the picky girl
April 22, 2013 at 3:48 pmOh, and Jane Eyre and more recently, Affinity by Sarah Waters.

April 22, 2013 at 3:55 pmold faves, still love dracula
Mary Anne
April 22, 2013 at 4:10 pmWhen I was younger I used to love to read Jane Aiken Hodge – her books were set Regency period but had a very Gothic feel.
Jen
April 22, 2013 at 4:39 pmFavourite gothic novel is definitely Wuthering Heights. It’s got unreliable narrators, scheming teenagers, and an unconventional love story.
What’s not to like?
Antonia
April 22, 2013 at 5:07 pmMy favorite gothic book is Nevermore by Kelly Creagh . Thanks for the giveaway.:)
Malin
April 22, 2013 at 5:10 pmJane Eyre, hands down. There are a lot of good Gothic novels out there, but this is still the best.
Mia
April 22, 2013 at 5:22 pmUnspoken has been on my list for a while now and I could really use some of that great Gothic atmosphere. I think it might finally be time.
Oh and for fave Gothic novel I love Jane Eyre, but my 2nd favorite has to be The Castle of Otranto, the originator of the Gothic novel. I read that novel three times in college.
Sam
April 22, 2013 at 5:28 pmWhy change the cover? The original US one was *so* distinctive and stylish! I really hope the new ones don’t put off readers from the always smart and funny Sarah Rees Brennan.
Favourite gothic novel: The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein.
Justine
April 22, 2013 at 5:50 pmAlthough it satirizes Gothic novels, Northanger Abbey counts, right?
Elena
April 22, 2013 at 5:53 pmI’m in love with everything Sarah writes and I’m ao excited for Untold. I love the new covers.
My favorite gothic novels are definitely Unspoken and Jane Eyre 🙂 x
Samantha Davies
April 22, 2013 at 5:53 pmWell the new covers are still pretty but I really loved the original Unspoken cover. It was beautiful artwork and just seemed to fit the story so well! My favorite gothic novel would probably be Dracula!
Breanne M.
April 22, 2013 at 5:59 pmI don’t really have a favourite Gothic novel, as it’s not a genre I read a lot of, but I plan to change that.
And I have to say, I also miss the old cover. I’m really getting tired of the unique covers changing to become more generic AND of covers changing midway through a series. These covers are nice enough but they look like a lot of what’s out there already and are SO different from the original.
Allison
April 22, 2013 at 7:35 pmmmm, Dracula and Jane Eyre<3

April 22, 2013 at 8:26 pmWuthering Heights. It was one of the only books I was forced to read in school that I actually enjoyed and recommended to other people. 🙂

April 22, 2013 at 9:07 pmI used to love Gothic novels, and am so glad they are coming back in vogue! I guess my favorite was probably The Wizard’s Daughter by Barbara Michaels but I also really loved The Curse of the Concullens by Florence Stevenson, which is a fun send-up of the genre. Thanks for the great giveaway!

April 23, 2013 at 2:55 amHuh, definitely a change of pace with the covers here. As an illustration nerd I loved the papercut cover dearly (and would have super-loved the whole series done in papercut covers because (a) beautiful, (b) unique), but covers! They change, it happens. These aren’t bad!
I don’t personally categorize “Gothic” when I think of novels I’ve read, but Unspoken is definitely one of my v. favs. 🙂
Erin
April 23, 2013 at 5:28 amWow….um…let’s just say I’m not really a big fan of the new covers. I thought the cover for the Unspoken hardcover was something unique and special and gorgeous and doesn’t scream YA PARANORMAL! in your face.
Carina Olsen
April 23, 2013 at 9:15 amThe covers look pretty awesome 😀 Loved the first one more, though.. <3 but love them 🙂 Thank you for sharing. <3 And ohh. Love the giveaway 😀 Thank you 🙂 Think my favorite YA Gothic cover must be The Nightmare Affair. <3

April 23, 2013 at 10:16 amHmmm… I think I’d have to go with The Phantom of the Opera! That counts as gothic, right? 🙂

April 23, 2013 at 12:10 pmJane Eyre is my all-time favorite, though I’m a fan of Phantom of the Opera and Poe’s works as well. And I LOVED the gothic elements in Unspoken! Can’t wait for book 2, though I wish the new covers showcased more of the humor in the books. Kami is such a fun voice to read.

April 23, 2013 at 4:23 pmI loved the paper-cut cover and am therefore sad that we won’t be getting more of the same. However, I am thrilled for Untold as SRB is perfect in all of the ways.

April 23, 2013 at 4:25 pma little sad about the covers too…LOVED the original ones–sooo beautiful!!!! anyways, favorite gothic novel? not sure if either of these qualify, but the graveyard book and chime come to mind which i LOVE and they have gothic undertones (i think?)

April 23, 2013 at 4:31 pmTo be honest, I’m never quite sure what constitutes a gothic novel. Some I’ve read are said to be, but I never got the feel from them that I figure should come along with gothic stuff. So I’m just not sure anymore. Does “Grave Mercy” count, since it has a great deal with do with death?
Serena
April 23, 2013 at 5:48 pmI really loved The Shadow of the Wind.

April 23, 2013 at 6:50 pmThe Gemma Doyle Trilogy! (That counts, right?http://thebooksmugglers.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

April 23, 2013 at 9:56 pmI don’t read a lot of gothic novels, but I do enjoy a good Wilkie Collins novel now and then.
Sarah
April 24, 2013 at 9:14 amI’m not sure exactly what constitutes a gothic novel either. I googled it and saw some lists, and one list had Beloved by Toni Morrison, and I know that’s not gothic, so maybe lots of people have no idea? 😀 In any case, I’ll go with my gut here. Maureen Johnson’s The Name of the Star seems possibly gothic-y, and Cassie Clare’s Infernal Devices books seem to fit the bill, in which case I’d say my fav gothic novel is Clockwork Princess.
Ellie
April 24, 2013 at 9:40 amhmmm… The covers are really cool, but I still like the old one. These are good too, more gothic sci-fy-ish to me.
Fave gothic novel… thats a toughy would something strange and deadly count? Hope so! 😛

April 24, 2013 at 11:43 amDefinitely Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Lee
April 24, 2013 at 12:13 pmThat’s a tough one…I love Edgar Allan Poe, but he did short stories and poems…I’d have to say The House of the Seven Gables.

April 24, 2013 at 3:43 pmI think my favorite gothic novel is The Picture of Dorian Gray or Northanger Abbey. The old classics. ;D

April 25, 2013 at 5:18 pmLove the new cover! I don’t always like when covers are re-done partway through the series, but this looks great 🙂

April 25, 2013 at 5:34 pmA gothic-y book I really loved was The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I heard it was just sold for a movie, so we’ll have to see what they do with it.

April 25, 2013 at 11:29 pmTo be honest, I’d have to say that I prefer the first cover more than the new one. The first cover is what actually made me read the book (yeah yeah… I know… I judge the book by its cover… the story was well written though! I loved it!). I was looking forward that the next book would be green and as nice as the first cover! I’m still getting the second book though! I must know what is next!

April 26, 2013 at 11:31 amI’m disappointed in the cover swap since I loved the first one to pieces, but a little unsurprised- it kind of looked middle grade to me (especially since Cavendish came out around the same time). Hopefully this one works out wonderfully for it 😀
As for favorite gothic novels, I’m jumping in on the Jane Eyre love <3

April 27, 2013 at 3:57 pmI love me some gothic and while I adore Jane Eyre, I think my favourite has to be Wuthering Heights, even if it’s dreasfully flawed!

April 28, 2013 at 2:09 pmHonestly I couldn’t tell you my fav cause I’ve never really read any Gothic books until Sarah came out with Unspoken, so that has to be my favorite one until Untold comes out. Which I CANNOT WAIT FOR 😀
