This week’s ponderings:
What is your favorite ’80s horror flick?
The Howling – Probably one of (if not THE) greatest werewolf movie ever
Prince of Darkness – John Carpenter’s answer to particle physics and theology; TACHYONS!
Re-Animator – Franken-zombies! And a new spin on ‘giving head’.
Return of the Living Dead – One word: “BRAAAAAAAAAINS!”
The Shining – Even though it’s not really like the book, so what! It’s still a classic.
The Thing – John Carpenter’s masterpiece (in this viewer’s humble opinion)
Friday the 13th – Camp Crystal Lake, Jason and that delicious score. Teen sex = BAD.
The Lost Boys – Look at that cast! Jason Patrick, Kiefer Sutherland, BOTH of the Coreys…
Halloween – Michael Meyers backs Jason up: Teen Sex = BAD!
Night of the Comet – A much overlooked campy wonder; after a comet passes over Earth, anyone exposed turns into red dust. Everyone else becomes zombies.
Poltergeist – “They’re heeeeeeere.”
Day of the Dead –
28 Days Later rips off this Romero masterpiece.
Evil Dead – Ash!!!!! (Before Sam Raimi was possessed by some hideous bad movie making demon)
A Nightmare on Elm Street – The one, the only, Freddy. My favorite line (from
Dream Warriors): “Welcome to prime time, bitch!” Oh yeah, and TEEN SEX = BAD!
Fright Night – Another one that doesn’t get enough love. The birth of ‘the vampire that lives next door’.
Hellraiser – Pinhead PWNS.
Aliens – Even better than the first movie, somehow all of these films stand the test of time and the special effects STILL kick ass. Ellen Ripley, you are my hero.
Basket Case – If you haven’t seen this one, you really must. Hilarious horror comedy about a boy and his hungry twin brother…
Christine – Freaky ass car.
Child’s Play – Chucky! Before he was reduced to making jokes about latex and having babies, he was actually one creepy doll. “Let’s play TRANSFER THE SOUL!”
Creepshow – Another classic; collaboration with the masters King and Romero brings to life EC comics from back in the ’50s (like Tales from the Crypt

April 19, 2008 at 7:59 amUm, um, um! It’s like trying to pick a favorite child or something!
Gaah I’m so torn. I love every single one of these movies, and others I know I left out too :p
Ultimately, I think I will go with good ol’ Freddy. I mean, when you think 80s horror, you think of the iconic Mr. Krueger.

April 19, 2008 at 10:31 amOh, god — I love all of these. But I’ve got to pick Basket Case, just because of the sex scene.

April 19, 2008 at 6:59 pmMeljean–Basket Case is something else, isn’t it 🙂 I remember watching this as a kid (my parents gave me a pretty thorough horror education!) and only recently re-discovered it. The sex scene! Well the one I’m thinking of is from Basket Case 2–and lookie I even found it on youtube! Bwahaha!

April 20, 2008 at 11:18 amYeah, there’s no way to pick just one, although The Shining is probably closest to the top.
And dude, you forgot about Children of the Corn! How could you forget that one?
Oh, and is Night of the Comet really a horror? I always just thought it was more funny than anything..

I am one of those folks who HATES horror films. My brother taumatized me with them as a child. Horrible!
That said, I love The Lost Boys. I finally got to see it the whole way through at a midnight showing while in college. (Gotta give props to a theater that does misnight retro screenings!)
Oh! There was this horribulous version of Phantom of the Opera that came out either late 80’s or early 90’s starring Robert Englund. So Gross!!! Yet I couldn’t help but watch it since it was the Phantom story line.

April 21, 2008 at 9:18 amShannon, do I sense another Phantom lover? I just love the story, the book, the musical, the movie with Gerard Buttler. Le sigh.
oh, and the Lost Boys is amazing. I love the soundtrack! Did you know Corey Feldman and Corey Haim are hooking up again to do a sequel? *shudders*
